Many 501(c)(3) organizations strive to create communities where everyone has a voice and opportunity. In election years, the work of these nonpartisan nonprofits is increasingly vital as they protect civil rights and civil liberties, strengthen the news and information ecosystem, and create civically engaged communities. Guided by the Democracy Fund’s All by April campaign, Glick Philanthropies is directing $750,000 to 10 organizations strengthening democracy in Indiana.
“In order to play a meaningful role in helping Hoosiers feel safe, informed, and civically connected during the 2026 election season and beyond, we know the nonpartisan nonprofits driving this work need support now,” said Hannah Riffle, portfolio manager of Glick Philanthropies’ healthy democracy focus area. “While we’ll look to voter turnout as a barometer of impact, our long-term goal is to help people become more engaged in their communities and feel empowered to take action.”
Glick Philanthropies’ grant commitment includes funding for year two of three to the following 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.
- American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana Foundation: Defending freedom & democracy in Indiana and across the United States
- Chalkbeat Indiana: Expanding educational equity through local news and information
- Common Cause Education Fund: Sparking civic engagement in Indianapolis and protecting marginalized voters across Indiana
- Free Press Indiana: Reaching the “unnewsed” and filling critical information gaps
- Indiana Democracy Collective: Strengthening democracy through collaboration & civic engagement
- Next Generation Initiative: Growing & sustaining the Indy Far East Magazine
- WFYI Public Media: Providing trusted journalism, inspiring stories, and lifelong learning
- Women’s Foundation of Indiana: Building collective power for women and girls throughout Indiana
Beyond these multi-year commitments, Glick Philanthropies is directing grants to Community-Engaged Alliance for Chronicling the Crossroads, a civic storytelling cohort, and to ReCenter Indiana to empower young adults to engage in civic life.
Since 2022, Glick Philanthropies has directed more than $2.6 million to support democracy-related initiatives in Indiana.

Glick Philanthropies is a founding member of Press Forward Indiana, in partnership with Indiana Philanthropy Alliance and Lumina Foundation. Press Forward Indiana — a chapter within the Press Forward National network — works to position local news as both a vital community connector and a public good by building a statewide network of funders who can work together to ensure trusted information reaches everyone in Indiana. Indiana Humanities America at 250
During America’s semiquincentennial in 2026, Indiana Humanities has developed and gathered opportunities for local conversations about our nation’s history. Resources include a toolkit, a planning framework, a facilitation guide, a speakers bureau, screening opportunities, and more. During 2026-2027, Indiana Humanities is sponsoring a tour of the Smithsonian’s Voices and Votes: Democracy in Action exhibition. Seven Indiana communities will host the exhibit for six weeks, including Angola, French Lick, Rushville, Upland, Greencastle, Vernon, and Columbia City. Learn more.
